Ian McKown's The Still Life-Learning to see - PAR 2/22
Tamaya New Mexico - Wednsday 2/22 12-3 Cost: $75 Limit 10
I spent a good amount of time doing still lifes, and I've found them invaluable to being able to accurately see, interpret and convey pertinent information in a painting, idea or tattoo. I think often, especially in tattooing, we see floating heads, single subjects and compositions that miss the interrelatedness of all objects in a group or composition. There are roughly 8 ways of approaching a still life, but i believe one based on value, light versus dark, edge control and temperature sensitivity are the surest and least subtle ways of going about it. Tattooers can benefit from this type of exercise as it allows them to accurately see the relationships between objects, the way light moves from one subject to the next, and how to bring it together in one believable composition.
Still Life supply list: A selection of flats and filberts, from size 2 on up, as well as a palette knife. Hogs hair to synthetic to sable are all acceptable. Please bring some odorless mineral spirits and a bottle of liquin as well. I will be providing canvas, paper towels and anything else I can think of that will be used during the workshop. Any questions beforehand please feel free to contact me.
