Bill DeMichele has been a professional photographer for over 40 years, shooting commercial, catalog and fashion photography. He has also been a leading tattoo photographer for more than 25 years, shooting over 250 conventions for magazines and personal exhibits. For the past 12 years Bill has been the senior photographer of International Tattoo Art magazine with over 150 covers to his credit.
His book "The Illustrated Woman" (Proteus Press, 1992) was a milestone for tattooing. The Illustrated Woman was the first coffee table sized tattoo book that had major distribution. With 3 printings, it has been translated into 3 languages, and changed the attitudes of women to wanting to get a tattoo. Since than, Bill has been continuously published in over 9 tattoo magazines in America, South America, Canada, Mexico and Europe.
His photo exhibits include museums and galleries in England, Holland, Australia and South Africa.
In America, Bil's shows include: La Luz de Jesus Gallery in LA, Tattoo Gallery with Ed Hardy in Chicago and The American Museum of Natural History in NYC.
He has also taught photography at he University of New York at Albany and has been interviewed by CNBC, History Channel and National Geographic Channel.
Bill did his apprenticeship with photographers Gene Black and Art Shaffer, studied with Ansel Adams, and has a BFA in art.
Believing that understanding the basics is important to mastering any medium, in this seminar Bill will thoroughly discuss the tools of his trade.
Topics to be covered:
The Camera: Brands and designs. Do you really need an expensive SLR?
Camera functions, all those choices, do you really need them all?
Shutter speeds and aperture, what are they, what do they do and how they work together.
Proper exposure, what it is and why you need it.
Depth of field and focus, how to control it.
Color balance and contrast, the number one mistake most of us make.
Lighting: Types and styles: hot lights, strobes and camera flash, do you need any of them.
Additional equipment needed like stands, hoods, and scrims. Does toilet paper on your flash really work.
Light temperatures and it's effects, how to save your photo before you even start.
Placement, contrast and composition, you are in control when you know how to use your light.
Shooting a tattoo: Most important: How to properly shoot a tattoo, especially a new tattoo. Getting rid of that damn glare. How to prep your client.
Photo File management: Explaining the difference between raw, jpeg, tiff, and png. Pixel sizes, DPI and PPI and why you need to know.
Naming and storing your files to help prevent others from stealing your work.
Transferring, sending and receiving large files over the Internet.
Prepping files: Using Photoshop to "pre-flight" a file, a quick guide to photo retouching, color correction and how to save your files properly.
File sizes, why you need more than one.
Preparing files for the Internet, printing and publishing, why there is a difference not only is size but also dynamic range.
Promotion: How to present your work to a tattoo magazine.
Preparing for a gallery exhibit and making dynamic prints from your files.
Using your photos to promote yourself beyond just social networking.
Legal: Know your rights and how to protect yourself.
A book containing all the pertinent information from this seminar will be provided to each student.
It is suggested that you bring your camera, and samples of your photography, if you would like it to be critiqued.
There will be time provided to answer your questions and one on one time to show you how to use your personal camera.
