April 12-17 2009 Paradise Tattoo Gathering is sponsoring Seminar week at Tattoos > Canman > Page 6 > Portrait of Gracie< previous next > | 54 of 80DescriptionWe are very honored that Chris and Brenda wanted Canman to tattoo their daughter on him. Below is Gracie's story: Grace Alice Campbell was born on September 4, 2003 with a rare and serious congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Her mother was twenty-two weeks pregnant with Grace when she was diagnosed with HLHS. The Doctor said they had three options. The first option was to terminate the pregnancy. The second option was called compassionate care (carry her to full term and then take her home to die). The final option was described as a three staged surgical procedure that had been tried in the past. The doctor who diagnosed Gracie’s heart condition made them feel like the only choice we had was termination, but this was never an option for them. Luckily they were referred to a pediatric cardiologist who told them they needed to be at Children’s Hospital Boston if they wanted to give their baby a chance. They chose to give Grace a chance at life. She had her first open heart surgery when she was 6 days old: She spent five weeks in the hospital. Her second open heart surgery was preformed when she was five and a half months old, and she was home just three days after surgery. Amazing! In more than one way Children’s Hospital Boston is where they found HOPE for Gracie, because this is where they met all the wonderful people who care for her and all the other families who are now a part of their hearts. Grace is now two and a half years old! She is one of the happiest little girls in the world, with the biggest blue eyes. She is certainly full of energy and spunk. She might even think she is the boss of the house! Grace brings more love into their lives then they could have ever imagined. As for a quality of life, well, they can say without a doubt that she has a quality life, and she has given them a quality that only a loving child can bring. HLHS has robbed their family of many things, but at the same time it has also given them gifts. They live life differently, and cherish every single second. Her third and hopefully final surgery will be scheduled after seeing her cardiologist this Augus.
